Square Knot

The square knot is very simple to do, just remember the old adage right over left then left over right. I started by attaching 2 (blue) cords using the Lark’s Head knot onto a (pink) horizontal mounting cord.

1) The outer 2 cords are the knotting cords, and the inner 2 cords are the filler cords. I’m right handed so I usually start with the cord to the right side of the filler cords. Lay it over the filler cords horizontally forming a loop on right.

2) Take leftmost cord and place over the horizontal cord, then underneath all cords and up through loop on right.

Pull both knotting cords out and tight. That’s 1/2 of the square knot, also known as a Half Knot.

3) Now take the left cord and lay over the filler cords horizontally forming a loop on left. Take right cord and place over horizontal cord, then underneath all cords and up through loop on left.

Pull both knotting cords out and tight. You just made one complete square knot.

As you continue to work several more knots you’ll notice that a bump forms either on the left or right. This little bump comes in handy if you get hungry and run off for a snack. If the bump is on the right just pick up the rightmost cord first to form a loop. If the bump is on the left, same thing, just start on the left.
